One of the goals of PennImmersive is to collect and share the literature about immersive technologies in education. In that spirit, below is a link to a 2008 article published in the Journal of the Learning Sciences, in which Stanford researchers studied theories and technologies behind virtual enviroments and reported data from four empirical experiments.
Results suggest that virtual environments will have a unique ability to alter the social dynamics of learning environments via transformed social interaction.
